Why Live Anywhere Else?

Annandale and the Military.

Annandale borders the largest military barracks in the southern hemisphere.

Lavarack Barracks was named after Sir John Dudley Lavarack, who as Major General Lavarack, was credited with repelling the assault on Tobruk by Germany's General Rommel, and later became Governor of Queensland.

Townsville has had strong ties in the Defence of our nation, with the construction of RAAF Base Garbutt, commissioned in 1939, and the completion of Lavarack Barracks in 1966. Lavarack Barracks became home to the 6th Royal Australian Regiment in 1968, two years after receiving a Presidential Citation for their efforts in the Battle of Long Tan during the Vietnam Conflict.

Lavarack Barracks is now occupied by the 3rd Brigade which includes the 1st Royal Australian Regiment and 2nd Royal Australian Regiment. With the brigade, the Combat Training Centre, Joint Logistics Unit and all the civilian support staff, Lavarack has a large number of employees, making the Department of Defence a major employer in the region.

A large number of these Defence employees reside in Annandale, and this has a significant effect on the demographic of the suburb. With many people on above average incomes, and with their performance in out-of-work hours heavily scrutinized, they make excellent tenants of rental properties.

The typical Christmas transfer cycle of regular Australian Defence Force (ADF) personnel gives landlords the opportunity to review their properties and assess the rental arrangements for future tenants on a conveniently, annual basis.
