NORTH –Travel to the glorious rainforests of Paluma, the refreshing waterfalls and picnic grounds of Crystal creek and the secluded and private cabins of Hidden Valley. The northern beaches offer a rural feel with fantastic fishing and horse-riding. Ride the rapids with the White water rafting crew at the Johnston River, or take a private house boat and explore the Hinchinbrook Channel and surrounding national parks. Stop in and enjoy a delicious and mouth-watering ice-cream from the Frosty Mango on the way home.
SOUTH – Come to the zoo, cuddle a Koala, snuggle a snake or catch a crocodile with the rangers of Billabong Sanctuary. Travel through the cane fields to the township of Ayr. Take a tour through the Sugar Mill and see where the sugar in your tea or coffee comes from.
EAST – Take the kids to Reef HQ, home of the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority or try your luck at Jupiters Breakwater Casino. Be drenched by “The Bucket” at the waterpark on the famous Townsville Strand, or catch the ferry to the relaxing Magnetic Island where you can hire a “moke” and see the sites, lounge on the sun-drenched beaches or take it easy at the remote fishing village of Westpoint, where captivating views across the water look toward Townsville’s golden shoreline, Cape Palleranda, and the Northern Stepping-stone Islands of the Palms group and Saddleback Island. Excellent scuba-diving exploration can be had with such famous shipwreck dive sites as the S.S. Yongala and the H.M.S. Pandora.
WEST – Head out west to the Goldfields of Charters Towers. See the historic township, visit the Venus Battery, see the naturally occurring hill of pure quartz, the White Blow, or pan for gold as so many hopeful miners before have done before. January is an exciting time when the town’s population swells with the Annual Goldfield Ashes – one of the largest cricket tournaments in the southern hemisphere, why not join in a play a game.
